Building a Bridge to a Better Future

Harry E. Bovay, Jr. has been building bridges, literally and figuratively, his entire life.

The Bridge Builder
By Will Allen Dromgoole

“An old man, going a lone highway,
Came, at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim;
The sullen stream had no fear for him;
But he turned, when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide...”

The Harry E. Bovay, Jr., Foundation has been created to encourage revitalization opportunities through education and community grants in Millport and Kennedy, Alabama; Fairmount, Georgia; North Lyon County, Kansas; Guntown, Houlka, Rienzi and Tishomingo, Mississippi.  As the founder of Mid South Telecommunications, Inc., it was Mr. Bovay's aspiration to give back to the communities that made a lasting impression on him while working within them.

The Bovay Foundation provides financial assistance to public school graduates in order to cover college expenses. Scholarships will help students from Lamar County, Alabama with funding for post secondary education at Bevill State Community College.  Teachers are also supported with educator grants.   Three other high schools are currently supported with educational opportunities and educator grants – Houlka Attendance Center in Houlka, Mississippi; Northern Heights High School in Allen, Kansas; and Santa Fe Trail High School in Carbondale, Kansas.   Students from these specific high schools who meet required qualifications are eligible to apply.  Community grants are considered for those areas that need additional help with projects such as community centers, emergency services, and technological upgrades will be considered.

The Bovay Foundation believes that providing college opportunities, educator grants and community grants in these specific areas will help improve educational standards and economic viability, resulting in an evolving, long-lasting impact within the communities.
